Ask the Professional

Q. Why are wasp, yellow jacket and honeybee stings so painful?

A. Stingers are tiny, but the reason stings are so painful is because venom is injected at the site of the sting. Venom can cause severe allergic reactions, swelling and a lot of pain. Honeybee stingers are barbed and usually remain in the wound. While yellow jacket stingers are not barbed and do not stay in the wound, the pain you feel from a yellow jacket sting is the venom, not the stinger. Yellow jackets are especially aggressive this time of year. To be safe, call us if you encounter a nest.
