A rat infestation is a scary prospect for any homeowner. In Washington State, we have two prevalent species – roof rats and Norway rats. Both can cause damage to your home and both harbor diseases.
The Norway rat is larger, primarily nocturnal and often enters homes when outside food sources become hard to find. If you have a problem, it’s best to contact a professional for effective Norway rat control.
What is a Norway Rat?
Norway rats are an invasive species that arrived in North America around 1775 in the holds of ships coming from Europe. They have established themselves throughout the U.S. and often live in close proximity with people in both urban and rural areas.
They can be found in homes, warehouses, stores, docks and sewers – anywhere there is a productive food source, water and shelter. In rural areas, they burrow to make nests and can be found along stream banks, ponds, garbage dumps and anywhere else food and water can be found.
Norway rats can reach up to 16 inches in length and weigh up to a pound. They are rather stocky but can enter a dwelling through a hole the size of a quarter! Their fur is coarse and usually brown or reddish gray with a white/gray belly. Norway rats can be identified by their size and the fact that the length of their tail is normally shorter than the length of their body.
How to Prevent Norway Rat Infestations
Norway rats tend to stay close to the ground. They are often drawn to woodpiles. Make sure to keep firewood stored a safe distance from your home. They also nest in debris, so keep the area around your home free of lawn debris. To keep them out, seal any holes in your foundation using an appropriate sealant and eliminate sources of moisture, especially in the basement.
It’s also important to inspect your home for signs like droppings, gnaw marks, damaged goods and rub marks caused by their oily fur.
