In Washington State, we have several species of spiders that can infest your home. Most species are little more than a nuisance.
One species in particular, cellar spiders, is extremely common in homes throughout the state. They like the cool, damp, dark environment your basement or crawl space provides.
At Whitworth Pest Solutions, we’re experts at identifying and eradicating spiders that live in Washington State. If you suspect your home may be infested, give us a call!
What are Cellar Spiders?
The cellar spider is very common to Washington. Our customers often ask us, “Do cellar spiders bite?” and “Are cellar spiders poisonous?” The answer to both of these questions is no. Cellar spiders have small mouths and short fangs that cannot penetrate human skin.
Cellar spiders seek out the dark areas of your home like basements, crawlspaces and cellars. They’re pale yellow to brown and are basically a nuisance, spinning large irregular webs to capture their insect prey, which they then spin into cocoons for later consumption.
How to Prevent Cellar Spiders
The best way to prevent any infestation is to seal cracks and crevices around doors, windows and your foundation. Inside your home, thoroughly clean and use insect prevention measures to reduce spiders’ food source. You should also vacuum up any webs, egg sacks or spiders whenever you come across them during cleaning.
