If you’ve ever had ants in your home, you know they can go from an occasional annoyance to a persistent pest quickly. While getting rid of ants may seem daunting, taking a step-by-step approach – including cleaning and implementing effective pest control treatments – can rid your home of ants for good!
Getting rid of ants in the kitchen is a multi-step process. Follow these steps for effective treatment and extermination:
Step 1: Identify the Species
Here in Washington State, we have three major pest species – pavement, odorous house, and carpenter ants. Each species requires different methods to eliminate and control them.
Step 2: Find Their Entry Points
Follow the ants and try to find the spot(s) where they are entering your home. Look in windows, doorways and cracks in the floor. Also check outside around your foundation.
Step 3: Find Their Nest
Once you’ve found the entry points, watch how they leave. Ants always follow a scented trail so colony members can find their way. You are looking for their nest. This is the spot to treat with poison, or set poisonous bait traps along their trail. They will pick up the poison and bring it back to the nest.
Step 4: Seal the Entryways
Use a silicon sealant to close all possible entry holes. This step will help to ensure that the ants don’t return in the future.
If the Problem Persists, Hire an Ant Exterminator
Often the best solution is to hire a professional. They understand ant behavior and can identify the species and create a plan to eliminate them from your home and keep them from coming back, saving you time and money!
